Editorial photography Rotherham

Creative photography for magazines, publications, brands and visual stories

Contemporary Editorial photography is about more than producing a strong individual image.

It is about creating photographs that communicate an idea, reveal something about a subject and work together to tell a story.

I work in the studio and on location across Yorkshire, including Sheffield, Rotherham, Leeds and Huddersfield, and travel throughout the UK for editorial commissions.

My work combines portraiture, fashion, documentary influences and creative direction, allowing each project to develop its own visual language.

Sometimes the story needs to be quiet and observational.

Often it needs hard light, deep shadow, movement, colour or something deliberately unexpected.

Editorial Photography With a Point of View

The strongest editorial photography does more than illustrate words.

It contributes something.

An editorial image can establish atmosphere, reveal character, create tension or completely change the way a reader approaches a story.

That is what interests me most.

My work often explores light, gesture, expression, environment and the relationship between a person and the space around them.

I am equally comfortable producing clean, restrained editorial portraits or building more experimental visual narratives using dramatic lighting, styling, movement and digital manipulation.

The visual approach is developed around the subject rather than applying the same photographic treatment to every commission.

Editorial Photography in Sheffield, Rotherham & Yorkshire

I work from my photography studio at Steelbox Works in Rotherham, within easy reach of Sheffield and the wider South Yorkshire region.

The studio allows complete control over lighting, backgrounds and atmosphere, making it particularly useful for portrait-led editorial work, fashion stories and concept-driven projects.

However, editorial photography often benefits from leaving the studio.

Homes, workplaces, streets, landscapes, architecture and unexpected environments can reveal far more about a person or story than a neutral background.

I therefore work both in the studio and on location throughout Sheffield, Rotherham, Leeds, Yorkshire and across the UK.

Photography for Magazines & Publications

I work with editorial photography as both a commissioned and self-directed practice.

Projects can include:

  • Magazine features
  • Editorial portraits
  • Fashion editorials
  • Artist and musician portraits
  • Interviews and profiles
  • Creative features
  • Culture and lifestyle stories
  • Travel features
  • Documentary stories
  • Brand editorials
  • Independent publications
  • Digital publications

A commission may involve one key portrait or a complete sequence of photographs designed to sit alongside an article or feature.

Where required, I can work closely with editors, art directors, writers, stylists and wider creative teams to ensure the photographs support both the story and the publication’s visual identity.

Editorial Portrait Photography

A good editorial portrait should tell us something about the person being photographed.

That does not always require elaborate production.

Expression, body language, environment and light can often communicate more than props or complicated setups.

Before photographing someone, I consider why they are being photographed and what the reader should understand about them.

An entrepreneur may require something very different from an actor, musician, artist, academic or designer.

Where appropriate, I use the subject’s own environment as part of the portrait.

At other times, a controlled studio portrait creates the strongest result.

The aim is not simply to make somebody look good.

It is to make the photograph mean something.

Fashion Editorial Photography

 – Fashion editorial sits between commercial fashion photography and visual storytelling.

Rather than simply showing the clothing, an editorial can build a world around it.

Lighting, styling, model direction, location and sequencing become part of a larger visual idea.

My fashion editorial work often draws on strong directional light, graphic shadows, movement, minimal styling and the visual language of photographers who shaped twentieth-century fashion imagery.

However, references are a starting point rather than a formula.

The objective is always to create work that feels contemporary and specific to the project.

From a Single Photograph to a Complete Story

Editorial commissions can vary enormously.

Some require one defining photograph.

Others need a complete visual sequence.

For larger stories, I consider how individual photographs work together rather than treating every frame as a standalone image.

A successful sequence might include:

  • Strong opening portraits
  • Wider environmental images
  • Details
  • Movement
  • Observational moments
  • Close portraits
  • Experimental frames
  • A clear closing image

This gives editors greater flexibility when designing pages while creating a much richer visual story.

Creative Direction & Concept Development

Not every editorial project begins with a finished concept.

Sometimes there is an article.

There is always a person.

And there is simply an idea worth exploring.

I can contribute to the development of the visual direction before the shoot, including:

  • Mood and references
  • Lighting direction
  • Location
  • Styling
  • Composition
  • Casting
  • Shot development
  • Visual sequencing

My background across photography, filmmaking, creative education and visual communication means I am comfortable discussing both the creative idea and the practical requirements needed to deliver it.

A strong concept does not need to become complicated.

It simply needs to give the photography a reason to exist.

Published Editorial Photography

Publication has remained an important part of my photographic practice.

My recent work has appeared in independent fashion and editorial publications including Vigour Magazine, SELIN Magazine, Untold magazine and other international titles, alongside work selected for platforms including PhotoVogue.

These projects allow me to experiment with ideas, lighting and visual approaches outside the restrictions of conventional commercial work.

Recent editorial projects have explored dramatic shadow, hard directional lighting, graphic body shapes, monochrome fashion, intense colour and the transformation of conventional studio photography through digital manipulation.

That experimentation also feeds directly back into commissioned work.

Personal work keeps commercial photography moving forward.

People, Culture & Creative Stories

Although fashion forms an important part of my editorial work, editorial photography can encompass much more.

I am particularly interested in photographing people with a story.

That could include:

  • Artists
  • Musicians
  • Actors
  • Designers
  • Entrepreneurs
  • Makers
  • Academics
  • Performers
  • Independent businesses
  • Interesting people doing interesting things

My background in documentary and street photography influences the way I approach these assignments.

Even when a photograph is carefully constructed, I look for moments that feel believable.

Editorial Photography for Brands

The Editorial-style of photography is increasingly valuable outside traditional publishing.

Brands are moving away from endless collections of generic promotional images and towards visual content that feels more human, considered and story-led.

Contemporary Editorial photography can be particularly effective for:

  • Founder stories
  • Brand profiles
  • Behind-the-scenes features
  • Employee stories
  • Campaign content
  • Website features
  • PR photography
  • Social media
  • Thought-leadership content
  • Customer stories

For organisations requiring ongoing commercial photography and video, my work through Burkitt Studio provides a broader retained visual-content service.

Burkitt Studio

Studio or Location Editorial Photography?

The story determines the location.

Studio Editorial Photography

Working in the studio when the photography needs strong visual control.

This can include:

  • Editorial portraiture
  • Fashion editorials
  • Dramatic lighting
  • Minimalist portraits
  • Experimental photography
  • Concept-driven stories

Location Editorial Photography

The right location can provide context that cannot be recreated in a studio.

A person’s home, workplace, city or environment may become an important part of their story.

I work throughout Sheffield, Rotherham, Yorkshire and across the UK depending on the requirements of the commission.

More Than 20 Years of Photography

I have worked professionally with photography for more than two decades and hold a Master’s degree in Photography.

Alongside my photographic practice, I have spent many years teaching photography, visual communication and creative subjects.

That experience has encouraged me to think deeply about why photographs communicate in the way they do.

Light, composition and technical ability matter.

But so do context, culture, gesture, sequencing and the relationship between an image and the audience viewing it.

My Editorial photography brings all of these elements together.
