Rome Unfiltered – Street & Travel Photography by Lance Burkitt

In July 2024, my wife Kirsty and I spent a week in Rome during a blistering heatwave, with daily temperatures reaching 38°C. Despite the intensity, we explored the city entirely on foot — uncovering its ancient beauty, vibrant street life, and quiet corners away from the crowds.

Armed with my Canon R6, I set out not to capture tourist highlights, but to create something more personal. I wasn’t looking for postcard clichés. I wanted to reflect the mood, texture, and smaller moments that truly define a place. From weathered facades deep in the city’s heart to golden light slipping across centuries-old ruins, I sought out the scenes that felt lived-in and honest.

Having Kirsty with me shaped the experience in profound ways. We shared early mornings, long ambles, and slow afternoons in shaded piazzas. Her presence brought calm, perspective, and space for me to see the city more clearly. These photographs aren’t just visual records of Rome — they’re a quiet documentation of connection, patience, and shared discovery.

The heat slowed everything down. And that was a gift. It pushed us to pause more often, to notice more deeply, and to move through the city with intention. That slower rhythm is reflected in these images — grounded, textured, and full of quiet presence.
