Street & Travel Photography in Ireland | Lance Burkitt

Both Kirsty and I have a deep-rooted connection to Ireland. Our families have origins there, and for me, that bond runs especially deep — I lived in Ireland during the 1990s, in a former life as a musician. It’s a place that feels familiar in a way few others do.

For years, we’d planned a trip with Kirsty’s parents to explore the country by road: Dublin, Wexford (where Kirsty’s Irish roots lie), Galway (where I lived in the mid-’90s), and Donegal — my family’s home ground. We finally made it happen in October 2024, setting off during half-term with a packed itinerary and high hopes.

It had been nearly 20 years since I last visited, but the moment I hit the road — as both driver and navigator — it all came rushing back. We had little more than half a day in each location, barely enough time to absorb the legendary Irish hospitality, yet still, the warmth and welcome were unmistakable. Ireland, in that sense, hasn’t changed a bit.

The weather was classic Irish autumn — a bit of sun, a bit of rain — but always dramatic enough to give us breathtaking views and moments to remember. Highlights included the windswept beach where Saving Private Ryan was filmed, the energy of Galway City, and the surreal experience of standing on the Quiet Man bridge, immortalised by John Wayne and Maureen O’Hara over 70 years ago. We wandered through Cong, the very heart of that story, before heading north.

The final stretch took us along the Atlantic Drive to Ramelton, my maternal grandfather’s hometown. We explored Fanad Head, Knockalla Beach, and a scattering of Game of Thrones filming locations across Northern Ireland — rugged, cinematic, and utterly unforgettable.

Lance Burkitt: Ireland Street & Travel Photography is more than just a collection of images — it’s a series of personal reflections, cultural reconnections, and shared discoveries. It’s a visual journal of family, heritage, and the power of returning to a place that helped shape you.
